From oxen to tractors

A productivity gap of years, closed in a single season.

One ox-drawn plough opens roughly half an acre a day. A NUTOFA-rostered tractor opens four to six acres in the same time at member rates.

That is the productivity difference that lets a small farm grow a real cash crop, a teenager finish school, and a household stop selling its harvest at the gate to the first middleman with a Hilux.

What the fleet does not include, the cooperative sources through its network: 121 member-owned tractors on the dispatch roster, and combines, excavators and land-clearance plant reached through members and partners. The cooperative also coordinates 167 farmer groups and 17 primary cooperatives across the four sub-regions.

Three Kubota tractors and a full implement set.

In June 2026 the cooperative received three Kubota diesel tractors (two M9540, one M7040) and a matched set of implements from the Microfinance Support Centre, under Government of Uganda mechanization support. The units are already in the field, threshing for members.

Book through the secretariat.

Revised rates for fully registered members, reflecting current overhead costs including fuel. Trailer work is negotiated per trip, per bags or per task. Group bookings of 20+ acres get an extra 10 % off the member rate.

We work with a small set of dealer partners on the new and second-hand tractor markets. Paid-up members get structured asset finance with a 20 % down payment and a harvest-linked repayment schedule.

Operator network

Trained, rostered, fairly paid.

Operators on the SACCO roster are dispatched against member bookings, paid by the cooperative on a per-acre basis, and re-certified on a defined refresher cycle. Apprentices welcome.
